In Remembrance, Arthur "Captain Mop" Murray, Jr. December 28, 1938 - October 21, 2024, US Veteran-US Army
Arthur Murray, Jr., known to all as "Captain Mop", passed away peacefully at Savannah Memorial Hospital on October 21, 2024 at the age of 85. He was born on December 28, 1938, on Hilton Head Island, SC to the late Arthur and Annie Bell Walters Murray. He attended school on the Island and the Historical Penn School on St. Helena Island, SC, receiving his High School diploma.
"Captain Mop" spent most of his life as a Commercial Shrimper and Fisherman on the coast of South Carolina, Georgia, Florida, Mississippi and Texas, he even accepted a memorable assignment in Cuba. He loved and proudly captained many boats throughout his career. He enjoyed shrimping, fishing, crabbing and picking oyster. He kept a clean deck, mopping it very often, earning his nickname "Captain Mop". He loved mentoring and teaching others the trade. He generously shared the fruitage of his labor with family and friends, especially those in need. He proudly served in the US Army as well.
On March 6, 1961, he was joined in holy matrimony to Annie Mae Stewart of Hilton Head Island, SC. To this union, six children was borned, Lillie Monroe (Anthony), Arthur Murray, III (Richshonda), Rosetta Robinson (Roland), Diana Evans (Jimmy), Romona Murray, Joanne Merriman (Jackie). He is preceded in death by one son, Willie Lee Fields, one sister, Lucille Murray Crawford, six brothers, Arthur Jones, Frank Murray, John Henry Murray, Melvin Murray, Jonathan Murray and Wilson Murray.
Along with his wife of 63 years, Annie Mae Murray and his six children, he leaves to mourn his death, his brothers, David Murray, Louis Murray; two sisters, Evelyn Lee and Susie Mae Murray, five sister in-laws, Willie Mae Jones, Henrietta Simmons, Gwendolyn Murray, Mary Stewart and Cora Ferguson (Anthony), a host of grandchildren, great grands, great great grands, nephews, nieces, cousins and friends.
The family is extremely grateful for all the love and support shown to "Captain Mop" and the family during this most difficult time in his life over the past year as his health declined.
As per his wished, there will be no viewing, memorial service or repast. The cremains are to be interred at the Beaufort National Cemetery, Beaufort, SC.
