September 30, 1935 — November 16, 2023

Collins

Bobbie Jane Simpson-Mincey gained her Heavenly reward on Thursday, November 16, 2023.  She was born on September 30, 1935, to the late Gordon G. Johnson and Neller Bell Byrd Johnson in Tattnall County.  From an early age, she joined Mt. Pilgrim Missionary Baptist Church in Collins and served faithfully until her health began to fail.  Bobbie would fill the vital role of church secretary for more than 50 years.  Her formative years of education was spent in the Tattnall County School system.  Following high school graduation, she would pursue a degree in education at Savannah State College.  In June of 1969, Bobbie would go on to graduate with her Bachelor of Science in English.  Her career would be spent in various school systems, including Vidalia, Glennville, Reidsville, and Collins. While at Glennville High School, she would serve as one of the very first black educators on staff.  Her kind and gentle spirit was highlighted by her beautiful smile.  She would provide a positive impact on the lives of thousands of kids throughout her lengthy career.  In retirement, she would also become a member of Georgia Retired Educators Association.  Her family was her world, and she was the matriarch of the family.   The days spent in the company of her children, grandchildren, extended family, and friends brought renewed brightness to her life.  Other hobbies included sewing, reading, gardening, and fishing for anything that would grab her hook.  Bobbie was preceded in death by her parents, Gordon G. Johnson, and Neller Bell Byrd Middleton; stepfather, Felton Middleton; husband, Artis Mincey; bonus brother, Charlie Lee Byrd, Sr.; and a loving grandson, Ricardo Brian Gaffney.

Left to cherish precious memories of a life well lived are her three children, Patricia (Daniel) Gaffney-Mitchell of Lyons, Anthony Ricardo (Gloria) Simpson of Athens, and LaWanda (Brian) Sanders of Collins; brother, Devon Beal of Reidsville; sister, Lavern Johnson of Philadelphia; an uncle, Willie Byrd of Jersey City, NJ; numerous bonus children, a host of grandkids, great grandkids, nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends also survive.
