Bobby Schwallenberg, age 71, passed away Thursday, July 10, 2025 at Memorial Health University in Savannah. He was born on November 21, 1953 in Maryland and had lived in Collins most of his life. For an impressive 46 years, Bobby carved out a respected career as a diesel mechanic specializing in heavy equipment, where his remarkable skills as a welder were well recognized. His remarkable talents, coupled with an unwavering work ethic, made him a valued member of his profession.
Bobby was not just a skilled tradesman; he was a devoted family man with a heart that knew no bounds. He cherished every moment spent with his son and grandsons, embodying the spirit of love that permeated his life. His affection was felt deeply by all who knew him – he truly loved BIG.
A man of the outdoors, Bobby was deeply enthusiastic about hunting, particularly deer and coon, and he also found joy in fishing. His passion for nature not only provided him with happiness but also connected him with friends and fellow members of the Flatwoods Hunting Club.
Bobby’s commitment to his community was evident in numerous ways. He took pride in heading the annual Relay for Life event, showcasing his dedication to important causes. He served as the president of the Georgia Dog Hunter Association, demonstrating his leadership and passion for the sport. Additionally, his service on the Collins City Council and tenure as Mayor were marked by his desire to improve and uplift his community.
Bobby is preceded in death by his parents, Robert "Sonny" Schwallenberg and Betty Jean Schwallenberg; his sister, Sharon Rogers and his niece, Crystal Hilliard.
He is survived by his wife of 51years, Becky Schwallenberg of Collins; his son and a special daughter in law, Brian and Terri Schwallenberg of Claxton; his grandsons, Dalton Benton, Aaron Schwallenberg (Alyson) and John Schwallenberg (Claire) all of Claxton; his siblings, Tommy (Ethel) Schwallenberg of Texas, Rodney Schwallenberg and Loretta Saunders all of Florida; several nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends beginning at 1:00pm on Sunday, July 13, 2025, with the funeral services to follow at 3:00pm from the Chapel of Low Country Cremation and Burial with Reverend Wes Kirkland officiating. Interment will be in the Evergreen Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Brian Schwallenberg, Dalton Benton, Aaron Schwallenberg, John Schwallenberg, Shane Blalock, John Kennedy, Tommy Lanier, and Neal Parker.
Honorary pallbearers will be Mike Baldwin and the members of the Flatwoods Hunting Club.
Memorials may be given to the Shriner's Children Hospital or Tattnall CARES.
