SSG. Edward Alga Williams, US ARMY, RET

Mr. Edward A. Williams was born August 28, 1940 and peacefully transitioned on Thursday, November 13, 2025. He was the seventh child of ten children born to the late Gussie Williams, Sr. and Annie Lou Williams. He accepted Christ at an early age. He was a graduate of the Tattnall County School System.

Mr. Williams served in the United States Army. He retired with the rank of Staff Sergeant. After years of honorable service, SSG Edward Williams was presented two bronze stars and a purple heart.

Mr. Williams was committed to serving and uplifting the community. He served faithfully for 38 years as an ordained Deacon at the Mount Olive Missionary Baptist Church. He was also a Sunday school teacher.

Mr. Williams also served as President of the Tattnall County Chapter of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP). The first black police officer for the city of Collins and President of the East Collins Community Center. He was always striving to help others.

Mr. Williams met the love of his life, Mary Helen Tillman, early in his life. They would go on to be married on June 2, 1964.

Mr. Williams was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Gussie; and three sisters, Marlene, Yvonette, and June.

His lasting memory will be cherished by his devoted and loving wife of 61 years, Mary (Tillman) Williams; daughter, Kathy (Herbert) McCray; Stanley (Caroline) Tillman and Alga Edward Williams; three sisters, Isabelle (Buford) Smith, Roxie Anna Smiley Carter, and Gussie (Joe) Smith; a brother, Thomas Williams, Sr.; seven grandchildren; fifteen great grandchildren; eight great great grandchildren; a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends also survive.
