Gwendolyn (Gwen) Jackson Holmes, age 76, passed away peacefully at Community Hospice in Vidalia, GA on Friday, June 27, 2025 by her son and friends. Gwen was born October 6, 1948 in Collins, GA to Doris Jackson and James L. Williams Sr. She was nurtured later in life by Mr. Robert and Ethel Morgan, who proceed her in death. She had one daughter Stephanie Holmes who proceeded her in death.
Gwen was a 1966 graduate of Tattnall Industrial High School in Reidsville, GA. and received her licensed practical nurse (LPN) Degree from Swainsboro Technical College in Swainsboro, GA. Her lifelong career was in nursing as a licensed practical nurse. She served others in various capacities.
Gwendolyn joined Bethel AME Church in Collins at an early age. She was a very active member. She was a member of the Junior Choir, the Youth Department, and she taught Sunday School class. Gwen was instrumental in youth groups, The AJ Jones Instrumental, and the Gospel Three which opened for well-known Gospel singers. As an adult, she sang in the Senior Choir, was Vice President and President of the Women’s Missionary Society (WMS) and Young People and children’s Division (YPD) Director at the local church. In the Augusta Conference, Gwen served several years in the WMS and with the YPD.
She served on the Wrens-Vidalia District as the YPD Director and the Coordinator of the Christian Debutante-Master Commission (CDMC) of the Augusta Conference. In the Savannah Central District of the Old Georgia Conference WMS, Gwen served as the Chairperson and Corresponding Secretary.
Gwen was a member of the Rural Southeast Black Nurses Association and the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP). As a teenager, she was active in the NAACP by attending civil rights events. Gwen had a caring spirit for helping others. She was a hard-working and dedicated nurse. She enjoyed traveling to church meetings. Gwen had a heart to give spiritual guidance and made an impact on the lives of many young people.
Gwendolyn leaves to cherish her memories, one son Kelvin (Kendria) Holmes, Glennville, GA. Ten sisters: Helen Holloway, Jacksonville FL; Eugene Morgan Tilliman, Atlanta, GA; Marian (Gene) McKinnon, Claxton, GA; Sady (Norman) Butler and Beverly (Michael) Dykes, both of Charlotte, NC; Synthia (Thomas) Parham, McGaheysville, VA; Teresa Williams-Mack and Lenora (Troy) Smith, both of District Height, MD; April Williams, EastiSlip, NY; and Linda Faye (Willie) Mercer, Statesboro, GA. Three brothers: James (Valeria) Williams Jr. Atlanta, GA, Lowell (Debrah) Morgan, Maryland; and Jowell (Jackie) Morgan, Gainesville, FL. Six grandchildren: Tyler Holmes, Brendarious Lee, Stephanie Holmes, LaKendria Jenkins, Devin and Devon Jenkins and two great grands. A special niece: LaShonda Holloway. A special nephew: Stacey Jordan. A special friend: Larry Coley. Extended brothers and sisters: Lizzie Gibbons, Vidalia,GA; JoAnn Ealey Stillmore, GA; Richard Farmer; Sandra Farmer, Reidsville, GA; James (Barbara)Farmer, Franklin Farmer, Atlanta, GA; and Gennie (Shawn) Hutson, Hinesville, GA. She has a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins. Special caregivers: Ramonia Dugger and Felicia Forbes; along with the help of Katie Scott, Diane Smith, and Mary Ann Jackson.
The family will receive friends from the hours of 6:00pm to 8:00pm on Friday, July 11, 2025 at the funeral home. Funeral services will be conducted 11:00am on Saturday, July 12, 2025 at Bethe AME Church in Collins.
