H.Q. "Johnny" Howard, Jr.

H.Q. "Johnny" Howard, Jr., age 83, passed away peacefully on May 3, 2026, at his residence under the compassionate care of Hospice of South Georgia. He was born in Long County on March 19, 1943, in Glennville to H.Q. and Frankie Overstreet Howard and had lived in Glennville all of his life.

Johnny devoted 34 years of his professional life to the Georgia Department of Correctional Industries. Throughout his career, he exemplified steadfast dedication and a strong work ethic, earning the respect of colleagues and community members alike.

Johnny found happiness in the company of his beloved dog, Benji. Together, they shared morning breakfasts at McDonald’s, a routine that brought comfort and camaraderie. Following breakfast, they would stroll next door to the Jet convenience store where Johnny was known for his friendly conversations, greeting all who entered and exited with warmth and sincerity.

In his leisure moments, Johnny indulged in his passions for fishing, watching NASCAR races, and rooting for the Atlanta Braves.

He is a member of Grace Baptist Church and is preceded in death by his parents; his brothers, Jimmy and Ricky Howard; and his sister, Faye Howard.

Johnny is survived by his wife of 63 years, Carol Driggers Howard of Glennville; his children, Darlene (Robert) Manville of Milledgeville and John (Renee) Howard of Reidsville; and his grandchildren, Ethan Wilkins (Savannah), Erin (Caleb) Poppell, and Ansley Howard (Levi). He also leaves behind his great-granddaughter, Iley Poppell, brothers, Dewayne (Lynda) Howard, Vance (Kim) Howard all of Glennville, Mike (Connie) Howard of Ludowici, and his sisters, Ann Smith and Pam (Bruce) Cavanaugh of Savannah, Joy (Eli) Love, Kathy Nobles all of Glennville Brenda (Eddie) Pye of Jesup and Carol (Paul) Lewandowski of Glennville; sister-in-law, Vivian Howard of Reidsville and a host of nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends at 3:00pm on Wednesday, May 6, 2026 with the funeral services to follow at 4:00pm from the Chapel of the Glennville Funeral Home with the Rev Robert Long, Bishop James Holland and Rev. Brad Pickren officiating.
