James Lewis “Papa Woogie” Johnson, age 64, passed away Tuesday, March 1, 2022, at Memorial Health in Savannah after a battle with COVID. He was born in Lyons on March 15, 1957 and had lived in Toombs County most of his life. He was a truck driver for over 40 years and currently was working for Claxton Poultry. James was a professional boxer and was well know as “James Rice Man”. He also was a Pit Master owning and operating with his wife the Papa Woogies Barbeque in Lyons. He is preceded in death by his fathers, James Mann, Al Miller and Dewey Byrd; his mother, Rosetta Johnson, his grandmother that raised him, Vertie Lee Jackson Nelson.
He is survived by his wife, Charlene Spann Johnson of Lyons; children, Latwanna Miller and Rosetta Johnson both of Florida, Crystal Joiner of Swainsboro, Terrance Johnson of Illinois and Michael Johnson of New York; brothers, a stepmother, 3 sisters and 2 brothers; aunts, Martha Johnson and Carolyn Brown both of Lyons; host of grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends from the hours of 5:00pm to 7:00pm on Saturday, March 5, 2022, at the funeral home. Funeral services will be conducted 2:00pm on Sunday, March 6, 2022, from the Chapel of Low Country Cremation and Burial with Pastor Craig Blount officiating. Interment will follow in the Macon Cemetery in Lyons.
