Jerry W. Burkhalter, age 86, passed away on Thursday, May 28, 2026 at his home surrounded by his loving family and under the care of Community Hospice. He was born in Glennville on September 12, 1939, to Rudolph and Kate Tootle Burkhalter.
A proud graduate of Glennville High School in the class of 1957, Jerry continued his education at the Georgia Military Institute, where he was commissioned as an officer. His sense of duty and honor was further demonstrated through his service as a U.S. Army veteran, embodying the qualities of discipline and dedication throughout his life.
Jerry’s professional career was distinguished and impactful. He retired in 1990 as the district engineer from the Georgia Department of Transportation, where he devoted 34 years to the improvement and maintenance of Georgia’s infrastructure. His work contributed significantly to the safety and development of transportation systems in his region, laying the foundation for future growth and connectivity.
Beyond his engineering career, Jerry was a devoted cattle farmer who found great satisfaction in assisting fellow cattle producers. His passion for cows was evident in his efforts to help others manage their operations more efficiently, reflecting his enduring commitment to community support and stewardship of rural life.
Jerry’s leadership extended into numerous community roles. He served with distinction as Chairman of the Board of Tattnall County Commissioners. Additionally, he contributed his time and expertise to the Tattnall County Health Board, the Glennville Recreation Department, and the Tattnall County Hospital Board. Each position underscored his dedication to improving the quality of life for those in his region.
A man known for his warm personality, Jerry’s goal each day was to meet a new friend, a testament to his outgoing nature and heartfelt desire to connect with others. His love for animals was deep and genuine, complementing his pastoral lifestyle and his caring spirit.
Among Jerry’s proudest accomplishments was coaching the church softball team to victory in the 1976 Non City Championship. A cherished memory, the winning ball, his personal glove, and the trophy remain preserved in his museum, symbolizing both his sporting spirit and his enduring commitment to community and faith-based activities.
Jerry is a member of the Glennville Methodist Church where he served as the Chairman of Pastor Parish Committee, and the Sunday School Superintendent. He was preceded in death by his parents.
He is survived by his loving wife of 62 years, Faye Jenkins Burkhalter; daughters, Susan (Charles) Greer and Sandy Pazderski (Jay Folsom) all of Glennville; grandchildren, Marly Greer, Maggie Greer, Rich Pazderski, and Abi Pazderski.
The family will receive friends on Monday June 1, 2026 beginning at 10:00am with the funeral services to follow at 11:00am at the Glennville Methodist Church with Reverends David Donnan and Steve Posey officiating. Private Interment services will be conducted on Tuesday at the Georgia Veterans Memorial Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be William Addis, Bernard Purvis, Gary Banks, Wilbert Johnson, Sam Johnson, and Glenn Brewton.
Memorials may be given to the Glennville Methodist Church.
