Karen (Kay) Dunham Youngblood passed away on Wednesday, December 7, 2022, at Community Hospice in Vidalia after a short illness. “Kay-Ma”, as she was affectionately known by all those who knew and loved her, was full of life and loved with all her heart.
She was born on November 29, 1941, in Ludowici, GA. She is preceded in death by her husband of 49 years, Kenneth “Blood” Youngblood, parents, Joe and Evelyn Dunham, her brother and sister-in-law, Parker & Chris Dunham and brother-in-law, Spencer Youngblood.
Kay graduated from Long County High School in 1959 and went on to attend and graduate from Brewton Parker College in 1961. It was there that she met Kenneth. They were married in 1961 and were blessed with their daughters, Kim and Krystal.
Kay began her career at Georgia State Prison in 1969. She left her job at the prison in 1979 and opened a flower shop in Reidsville for 5 years. In 1983, Kay returned to Georgia State Prison, where she worked in the business office and was promoted to Deputy Warden of Care & Treatment at Wayne State Prison and Ware State Prison before returning to Georgia State Prison, where she retired in 2003 as Deputy Warden Care and Treatment.
After she retired, her days and years were consumed by spending time with her children, grandchildren and great grand babies. She was the happiest when all of her “babies” were gathered at her home.
Kay-Ma loved her family, and she loved those who were like family. She had a way of making everyone feel special and loved.
Survivors include her daughters and sons-in-law, Kim and Ken Tatum & Krystal and Ricky Trull; Grandchildren are Kay-Lyn and Trevor Boyett, Tyler and Maggy Trull, Kameron and Ansley Tatum, Spencer Hinson and Kenzie Kay Hinson; Great grandbabies are Evan Kate Bass, Mack Trull, Brantley Boyett, Kenann Tatum, Kamley Trull and Emmitt Boyett; Special nieces and nephews; Tina Dunham, Shannon Dunham, Stevie & Brooke Hinson, Taylor & Kevin Flowers, Allie Dunham, Terry & Marsha Futch and Pam Edmondson; Special “daughters”; Barbara (Gary) Blaxton, Bridget (Willie) Beecher; Loving caregivers; Beverly Hines and Cathleen Sharpe, the nurses and therapists of Amedysis Home Health and the Staff of Community Hospice; sister, Gayle Scott; brother & sister-in-law, Lang & Lana Dunham; sister-in-law, LaVerne (Albert) Darley; many cousins, nieces, nephews and countless friends also survive.
Visitation is scheduled for Friday, December 9, 2022, from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at the chapel of Low Country Cremation & Burial.
Funeral services are scheduled for Saturday, December 10, 2022, beginning at 11:00 a.m. at Pineview Baptist Church, 6370 GA-121 Reidsville, GA 30453, with Rev. Kenny Edwards officiating.
Entombment will follow services at Reidsville City Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Cade Beecher, Garrett Blaxton, Buz Cromer, Alexander Darley, Andrew Darley, Shannon Dunham, Kevin Flowers, Terry Futch, Spencer Hinson, Bray Hutcheson, James Kennedy, and Zac Kinsey.
