On June 8, 2025, Marva Yvette Butler peacefully departed this life while surrounded by her loving sons. She was born on October 4, 1965, in Reidsville to the late Louis and Ora Lee Butler. She was a graduate of Reidsville High School and a proud member of the class of 1983. She joined Greater Bethel AME church at a young age and was active with the youth department as well as the kitchen committee.
She was a devoted mother, loving sister, cool aunt, great cousin, and a reliable friend, who left an unforgettable mark on everyone she met.
As a mother, Marva was the epitome of love, resilience, and selflessness. Her three sons, Marcus, Tim, and Craige, were her pride and joy. Even though she would have to fuss a little, she devoted herself wholeheartedly to their education and well-being. She was a mother in every sense of the word: nurturing, strong, and endlessly supportive. No matter if it was local or if she had to catch a ride, she would be on the sidelines of every basketball, football, and even baseball games, cheering them on while eating her popcorn and drinking her Sprite.
In her lifetime, she had several jobs. For over 20 years, she found fulfillment in her work as both a paraprofessional and a tax preparer. In the classroom, “Ms Butler,” inspired young minds with patience, and creativity, while encouraging independence. She cared deeply for her students and coworkers. She often spoke about the dedicated teachers she worked with at Reidsville Elementary School. Some of these ladies became her best friends. She spoiled and looked out for so many kids that came through RES, no matter their race or relation to her. She would keep up with her former students and would smile as she would hear about their accomplishments, successful careers and lives. She was unforgettable to parents as well as the kids. A true testament to the lasting impact she made.
In addition to her teaching, she also dedicated many years to helping individuals navigate the headache of tax preparation. During tax season she served her clients with respect and kindness. Her work was not just a job; it was a calling to serve others.
She was the baby of the bunch and had a special relationship with each one of her siblings. She was the cool Auntie to her nieces and nephews. The one who you could talk to about anything, and she would keep your secrets.
Known for her giving spirit, Marva would give to others even when she had little to spare. It was a gift that reflected both her resourcefulness and her heart. Whether lending a listening ear, or offering encouraging words during hard times, she made those around her feel seen and cared for. Even though she knew your name, she would affectionately call you "baby", just like her mom would. She loved to laugh and spend time with family and friends. She was a fun-loving person, who in her younger years, loved to play softball and hang out with her girlfriends. The cool auntie who you could talk to about anything. Throughout the years, she opened up her home and refrigerator to many of her sons' friends. She knew how to stretch a meal and could cut a pound cake into 50 slices. Some even say she made the best cream corn. She loved talking on the phone and at night would usually fall asleep while on it. Her kindness knew no bounds, and she found joy in cheering others on, family, friends or complete strangers. This became a hallmark of her character, and her ability to lift others up will be remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing her.
She will always be loved, remembered and missed by her children: Marcus Butler, James (Tim) Early, and Craige Saxton Jr. A grandma to five grandsons and two granddaughters. Siblings: James (Sandra) Butler, Gladys (Roger) Jackson, Louis (Lutwinder) Butler, Patricia Brewton, Lenton (Bonnie) Butler, Mark Butler, and Gwendolyn (Charlie) Mydell. One aunt, Ola Pearl Ellis. A host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
The family will receive friends on Sunday, June 15, 2025 from the hours of 6:00pm and 8:00pm at the funeral home. Funeral Services will be conducted 11:00am on Monday, June 16, 2025 at Greater Bethel AME Church in Reidsville. Burial will follow in the St. Williams Cemetery.
