Raymond Edward "Ed" Garrett, 65, a spirited storyteller, steadfast Marine, and devoted "Paw Paw", slipped peacefully from this world on Friday, May 23rd, surrounded by love at Eagle Health & Rebab in Statesboro, GA. His daughter Heather and her mother, Vicki, kept a vigil at his bedside, holding his hand as he found his rest.
Born in Atlanta, GA on a crisp October day in 1959, Ed was the beloved son of Billy E. And Catherine E. Garrett. He proudly served his country as a Marine, and while the uniform came off, the grit, honor and pride for having served his country never did.
Ed made his way through life mostly around metro Atlanta, contributing to the logistics and hospitality industries, helping things (and people) get where they needed to be. After his father's passing in 2006, he answered another call of duty --this time to be near his mother in Eatonton, where he offered her his company and care. Later as illness took its quiet toll, he moved to Statesboro to be closer to family who would carry him gently through his final chapter.
Those who knew Ed will remember him best for the twinkle in his eye when telling a joke (sometimes long-winded, often hilarious), his deep love for the outdoors--especially if a fishing rod, as fast-moving bass boat, and Lake Sinclair were involved--and his passion for classic rock, which was always played just a little too loud, just the way he like it. He proudly called himself a "city fella in a cow town," a phrase that sums him up just right; a little contradiction, a lot of character.
Ed leaves behind a family who adored him; his daughter, Heather Padgett and grandchildren Ansley and Elijah of Statesboro; daughter, Samantha Garrett (Jayce Pate) and grandchildren Bentley and Paislee of Hiram; sister, Jennifer Garrett of Fayetteville; brother, Robert Garrett of Morganton; and a wide circle of nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews, who all knew the warmth of his humor and the strength of his love.
A private family ceremony will be held on June 23,2025, at the Georgia Veterans Cemetery in Milledgeville, where Ed will be laid to rest with military honors. There, under the quiet shade of Georgia pines, he will find his final peace.
Though he has cast his final line and turned down the volume for the last time, Ed Garrett's laughter, his stories and his fiercely loyal heart will echo in the memories of those he loved--and those lucky enough to have loved him back.
Low Country Cremation and Burial has been entrusted with arrangements for the Garrett family.
