Shellie Round Smelser, age 69, of Augusta, Ga, passed away peacefully on April 15, 2026, surrounded by love at Oxley Park Health and Rehabilitation in Lyons, Georgia. She was born on October 5, 1956, to Dr. Samuel Round and Mary Jarrell Round of Augusta, Ga. She married Tom Smelser, of Hephzibah, Ga in 1974, where they had three children. Shellie lived a life defined by compassion, strength, and deep devotion to her family. Following in her mother’s footsteps, Shellie graduated from Armstrong State University in 1995 with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing and spent the majority of her career as an OR and Hospice nurse. Shellie had a gift for making people feel safe and cared for. Her presence brought comfort, and her love created a home where others could always find peace. She was an active member of the Baptist church teaching children or leading and participating in women’s Bible studies. She was preceded in death by her grandson, Kyle Thomas Zimdahl; her mother, Mary Jarrell Round; and her father, Dr. Samuel Round of Augusta, Georgia.
She is survived by her loving husband, Tom Smelser; her children, Angela McDaniel, TJ Smelser, and Mary Rebecca Smelser; her son-in-laws, Richard “Mac” McDaniel and Skylar Kennedy; her grandchild, MacKenzie Paige McDaniel; and her great-grandchild, Reagan Paisley Zimdahl.
Though our hearts are broken, we take comfort in knowing that Shellie is now at peace and free from pain in eternity with the Lord.
A memorial service will be held at a later date. The family encourages others to extend kindness, offer care, and hold their loved ones close—just as she did throughout her life. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that those who wish can make a donation to Child Evangelism Fellowship as Shellie spent her adult life teaching children about Jesus.
Low Country Cremation and Burial has the honor to serve the Smelser family.
