Shirley S. Garrett

Nov 10, 1935 — Nov 1, 2026

Lyons

Shirley S. Garrett, age 90, passed away on Sunday, November 1, 2026, at Meadows Park in Vidalia surrounded by her loving family.  She was born in Reidsville on November 10, 1935 to Elmer and Theresa Strickland and had lived in Toombs County for over 50 years.

Shirley lived a life marked by strength, warmth, and a spirit all her own. She graduated from Reidsville High School in 1953, where she enjoyed playing basketball, and carried that same energy and determination throughout her life. She later retired from the Georgia Department of Corrections, where she served as a food service supervisor.

Shirley was a country girl at heart. She loved to hunt and fish, and she found joy in the simple pleasures of life and the company of others. She was known to be a spit fire, a person whose presence was unmistakable and whose personality left a lasting impression on those around her. She was also remembered as the best storyteller, able to bring laughter, memories, and connection to every gathering. One of the ways she showed her love most clearly was through cooking for everyone, sharing both meals and kindness with family and friends.

She is preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Hilton Dean Garrett; and her children, Ronnie and Karen Garrett.

Shirley is survived by her children, Ann (Fred) Underwood, Joy (Alex) Beckum, and David (Lesli) Garrett all of Lyons; grandchildren, Joanna (Jeff) Adams, Amy Usher, Tracy (Ben) Allen, Trent Herndon (Brandy Carter), Lindsey (Darrin) Richardson, Lauren (Travis) Futch, Lucas (Tiffany) Beckum, Leigha Kirkley (Kevin Hunnicutt), Asa Garrett, Jocey Garrett, and Charlotte Garrett; 18 great grandchildren; 2 great great grandchildren; brother in law, Gary Schiek of Reidsville; several nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends on Tuesday, November 3, 2026, beginning at 6:00pm at the funeral home.  Funeral services will be conducted 11:00am on Wednesday, November 4, 2026, from the Chapel of Low Country Cremation and Burial with the Reverend Michael Kennedy officiating.
