William Hurshel Rushing

Feb 3, 1944 — Jul 13, 2026

Claxton

William Hurshel Rushing, age 82, passed away peacefully on Monday, July 13, 2026, leaving behind a legacy of faith, patriotism, hard work, and unwavering love for his family. A native of Bulloch County, Hurshel was born on February 3, 1944, to the late Clisby G. Rushing and Minnie Lee Rushing. He spent much of his life in neighboring Evans County, where he built a life rooted in family, service, and the values that defined him.

Hurshel proudly answered his nation's call by serving in the United States Army during the Vietnam War. While serving in combat, he was wounded in action, and for his courage and sacrifice, he was awarded the Purple Heart. Following his active-duty military service, he continued serving his country as a member of the Georgia National Guard. Alongside his military service, Hurshel enjoyed a distinguished 33-year career in Civil Service at Fort Stewart, where he specialized in operating and maintaining heavy equipment. Of all the equipment he worked with, motor graders were by far his favorite, and anyone who knew Hurshel understood just how much he enjoyed talking about them.

A faithful member of Emmaus Primitive Baptist Church, Hurshel treasured his relationship with the Lord and his church family. When he wasn't working, he could usually be found enjoying the outdoors. He loved hunting, fishing, tending his garden, and especially caring for his fruit trees. Hurshel was also an avid collector of firearms, a hobby he thoroughly enjoyed throughout the years. Whether relaxing on the porch with his favorite cream soda or spending time outdoors, he appreciated life's simple pleasures. Above all else, Hurshel's greatest joy was his family. He was a devoted husband, a proud father, and a loving grandfather whose eyes would light up whenever he talked about his grandchildren, affectionately known to him as "Sugar Dumplin'" and "Buckshot." The memories he created with them will be treasured for generations to come.

Though his years were marked by faithful service to his country, dedication to his work, and a deep appreciation for the outdoors, William will be remembered most for the love he shared with his family, the quiet strength with which he lived his life, and the example he set for all who knew him. His memory will forever be cherished, and he will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing and loving him. In addition to his parents, Hurshel was preceded in death by his brother, Floyd Rushing.

Left to cherish a lifetime of precious memories are his beloved wife of more than 60 years, Cathy Rushing of Claxton; his son and daughter-in-law, Aaron and Brandy Rushing of Reidsville; his grandchildren, Lacy (Jacob) Lyons of Washington State and Walt Rushing of Bellville; several other relatives; and countless friends whose lives were enriched by knowing him.

The family will receive friends on Thursday, July 16, 2026, from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. at the chapel of Low Country Cremation & Burial. Funeral services will be conducted on Friday, July 17, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. in the chapel of Low Country Cremation & Burial with Elder Craig Lanier officiating.
