Collins, Georgia
William “Shine” Oliver Lane, age 78, passed away on Tuesday, October 28, 2025, at Memorial Health University Hospital in Savannah following a brief illness. Born on February 3, 1947, Shine was a lifelong resident of the family homeplace just outside of Collins. He attended the local Collins schools and was a proud graduate of Collins High School. After graduation, he enlisted in the United States Navy, where he honorably served his country for four years.
Following his military service, Shine spent a few years working as a utility lineman before returning home to Collins, where he found his calling as a mechanic. For more than 24 years, he worked at Jarriel’s Garage, earning the trust and respect of the community through his skill, honesty, and friendly nature. In his later years, he returned to farming, coming full circle to the life he had always known and loved.
Shine was a member of the Blackwater Band for many years and enjoyed making music with close friends and neighbors. Never one for traditional hobbies, he found joy in tinkering with anything mechanical, especially lawn equipment and small engines. It seemed there was always someone dropping by to have him “fix something they broke,” and he was always ready to lend a helping hand. Known for his good heart and dependable nature, Shine was loved by many and will be deeply missed. He was preceded in death by his parents, Ronald and Beulah Lane; his wife, Judy Lane; and his sister, Rona Jean Chamberlain.
Left to cherish the memories of a wonderful man are his life partner, Renee Workman; chosen children, Debra Carter, Shawn Martin, and Kyle Martin; nine chosen grandchildren; two chosen great-grandchildren; two nieces, Jennifer (Guy) Woodmansee and Lea Ann Cates; several cousins, other relatives, and countless friends who will hold his memory close.
