Mrs. Betty S. Kennedy, age 89, passed away Friday, January 14, 2022, at Candler Hospital in Savannah.  She was born on September 8, 1932, in Wayne County to Joseph Joshua and Ida Mae Dukes Smith.  Betty grew up in Midway, Georgia, where her parents owned Ida Mae and Joe’s Truck Stop.  She graduated from Bradwell Institute and afterwards attended Brenau College.  She also worked with her parents at the truck stop where she met a Georgia State Trooper who became the love of her life.  Donald and Betty married in 1953 and made their home in Hinesville.  They eventually moved to Atlanta where Betty worked in the Research Department at Georgia Tech while Donald obtained his degree in Electrical Engineering.  Donald’s career took them to various places before they settled in Reidsville in 1970.  Betty was an excellent homemaker and cook, and caring for her family was her passion.

She was a former member of the Reidsville Garden Club and the Reidsville United Methodist Church where she volunteered and served on several committees.  In the last few months of her life she attended Tattnall Community Church and Ministries. Betty is preceded in death by her parents and a brother, Charles E. Smith.

She is survived by her husband of 68 and a half years, Mr. Donald Kennedy, Sr. of Reidsville; children, Dr. Donald (Merrie) Kennedy, Jr. of Jesup, Lynda (Dave) Moja and Joey (Jeannie Threatte) Kennedy all of Reidsville; grandchildren, Luke Moja, Caitlyn Moja (Jeremiah Stuard), Tripp Kennedy, Kort Kennedy, Kane Kennedy; sister-in-law Claudia Smith of Hinesville and several nieces and nephews.

Memorial services will be conducted 11:00am on Saturday, January 22, 2022, from the Chapel of Low Country Cremation and Burial with Pastor Marc Foster officiating, assisted by Pastor Steve Posey.

Low Country Cremation and Burial is serving the Kennedy family.
