Statesboro

Statesboro,

Mr. Billy Mikell, age 86, passed away Sunday, February 14, 2021 at East Georgia Regional Medical Center in Statesboro.  He was born in Statesboro on October 26, 1934 to Henry Clayton and Naomi Newsome Mikell and was lifelong resident of Bulloch County.  His formative years were spent in the Bulloch County School System, ultimately graduating from Statesboro High School, where he excelled in sports.  He held the school record for many years for pole vaulting and also received a full scholarship to play basketball at ABAC.  After graduating from college, Billy enlisted in the United States Army before returning to Bulloch County where he began farming.  Not only did he tend to the fertile farmland in Bulloch County, but he also managed a farming operation in the Dominican Republic.  For several years he would fly back and forth as he managed a sugar cane operation.  In addition to farming, he went to work for the State at Rogers State Prison where he would retire after 21 years as the Pesticide Agent for the prison.  In his free time, and even sometimes on the job; Billy loved “shooting the bull”.   No matter the topic, Billy was sure to be in the middle of the conversation! Other interest included fishing and serving others as a Mason.  A man whom you would look forward to conversations with and you could bank on his word, Billy Mikell will be deeply missed by all who knew him.  He is a member of Statesboro Primitive Baptist Church and is preceded in death by his parents.

He is survived by his children, William Craig (Mary Ann) Mikell of Milan and Jeffrey Shawn (Tara) Mikell of Statesboro; longtime girlfriend of 26 years, Shelva Jean Meguiar of Reidsville; sister, Lavinia (Lloyd) Hollingsworth of Statesboro; grandsons, Hunter Mikell of Colorado and Nick Mikell of Statesboro.

Graveside funeral services will be held 11:00am on Friday, February 19, 2021 at Eastside Cemetery in Statesboro with Reverend Keith Ferguson officiating.

Honorary pallbearers will be John McCall, Dale Sikes, Walter "Walt" Driggers, and Ricky Nevil.
